When I first started planning my trip to Amsterdam in the spring, I knew I wanted to see Keukenhof.

BUT I WAS REALLY STUMPED ON THE LOGISTICS OF HOW TO GET THERE, HOW MUCH TIME TO SPEND IN THE GARDENS, AND WHAT HIGHLIGHTS TO SEE.

I was looking for a train connection that didn’t exist, and ignoring the brilliant yet temporary travel network that appears seemingly out of thin air each spring to shepherd visitors from Amsterdam to Keukenhof.

If you’re still on the fence about whether or not to include a visit to Keukenhof, then be sure to read my post >> Is Keukenhof, Europe’s Largest Tulip Garden, Worth It?

And if you’re already sure that a visit to Europe’s largest flower garden is for you, then read on for my tips on how to plan a Keukenhof day trip from Amsterdam.

Key Keukenhof Dates & Opening Times

IN 2026, KEUKENHOF WILL BE OPEN FROM MARCH 19TH UNTIL MAY 10TH.

The park is open each day, including Sundays and public holidays, from 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Every year, the Bollenstreek Flower Parade is one of the busiest days at Keukenhof.

This year, it takes place on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

ANOTHER BUSY DAY IN KEUKENHOF IS KINGS DAY, WHICH TAKES PLACE ON MONDAY, APRIL 27, 2026.

Is Keukenhof Close to Amsterdam?

Keukenhof is close enough for a day trip from Amsterdam, but it’s far away enough that you need to plan ahead.

THE DRIVE FROM CENTRAL AMSTERDAM TAKES ROUGHLY 35–45 MINUTES, DEPENDING ON TRAFFIC.

During the six-to-eight-week tulip season, the Keukenhof team builds a temporary transportation system around the garden, with buses running to and from Amsterdam and other nearby cities, like Haarlem and Leiden.

The Easiest Ways to Get to Keukenhof from Amsterdam

There are three realistic ways to plan your visit, and which one you choose depends on how much flexibility you want.

Option 1: Direct Keukenhof Bus from Amsterdam

The easiest way to get to Keukenhof from Amsterdam is with the direct, round-trip bus

This option is so popular that the bus ticket is often purchased together with an entry ticket, in what is called a Combi Ticket.

In Amsterdam, the bus meeting point is near the Europaplein metro station, next to the RAI Amsterdam convention center.

THE BUS TRIP TO KEUKENHOF TAKES ABOUT 30 MINUTES FROM AMSTERDAM.

Though the entry tickets to Keukenhof are timed, you are free to take the return bus back to Amsterdam at any time after your arrival.

Option 2: Guided Keukenhof Tours

A guided tour makes sense if you want to add other experiences to your Keukenhof visit, and you’re happy to outsource all planning to a tour operator.

The most popular experiences to add to a Keukenhof day trip include a windmill cruise inside the gardens or tours of nearby commercial tulip farms.

The trade-off, of course, is flexibility.

YOU’LL BE MOVING ON THE TOUR’S SCHEDULE, NOT YOUR OWN.

If you’re the type of traveler who likes to linger over a particularly beautiful garden bed or sit quietly by the lake for a few minutes, you may find the timeline slightly restrictive.

Still, for short trips to Amsterdam or travelers who want context about the tulip industry, it’s a convenient solution.

Option 3: Driving with a Car

If you’re traveling by car or already have plans to rent a car, then driving directly to Keukenhof is a convenient option.

PARKING AT KEUKENHOF IS STRAIGHTFORWARD, AND THERE ARE DESIGNATED PARKING LOTS FOR CAMPER VANS AS WELL AS REGULAR PASSENGER VEHICLES.

If you plan to park at Keukenhof, though, be sure to purchase your parking tokens in advance, online, to avoid paying a higher price in person.

Should You Visit Keukenhof in the Morning or Afternoon?

IN MY OPINION, WHEN YOU TIME YOUR VISIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STRATEGIC DECISION YOU’LL MAKE.

Keukenhof is open daily from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM during its short season, but crowd patterns are predictable.

The busiest hours tend to fall between late morning and mid-afternoon.

IF YOU WANT THE CALMEST EXPERIENCE, ARRIVE AS CLOSE TO OPENING TIME AS POSSIBLE.

There’s something especially magical about walking through a garden in the early morning hours, and at Keukenhof, that magic is multiplied by the lack of crowds.

An afternoon visit is certainly doable, but it requires a bit more patience in the indoor pavilions and at the most popular photo spots.

If you’re structuring this as a half-day trip from Amsterdam, I would make Keukenhof your morning activity and return to the city by early afternoon.

How to Structure the Perfect Keukenhof Half-Day Itinerary

Keukenhof is expansive, with more than 70 acres of flower beds, but it does not require an entire day.

I’ve found two and a half hours to be a comfortable amount of time to dedicate inside the gardens.

HERE’S HOW I WOULD STRUCTURE THE DAY:

🚌 Depart Amsterdam in the morning, between 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM.

🌷 Spend the first part of your visit exploring the outdoor gardens and larger flower beds.

🎋 Visit the windmill, and then tour the indoor pavilions. These areas can get busy in the afternoon, so try to get there before the crowds.

🛝 If you’re traveling with children, you’ll likely want to stop at the playground area for a bit of a break from the flowers.

🚌 By the afternoon, you can be back in Amsterdam, with plenty of time left for a canal cruise, museum visit, or leisurely dinner.

There are food stands inside the gardens, but I’d recommend planning your main meal back in Amsterdam.

FAQs About Visiting Keukenhof

How far in advance should you book a Keukenhof day trip?

Because Keukenhof is only open for a short window each spring, it’s best to book your transport and entry slot at least six to eight weeks in advance, especially if your Amsterdam trip overlaps with a major Dutch holiday.

Popular sell-out dates include the Bollenstreek Flower Parade, on Saturday, April 18, 2026, as well as King’s Day on Monday, April 27, 2026.

Where do you catch the Keukenhof bus in Amsterdam?

The main departure point for the Keukenhof bus in Amsterdam is near Europaplein metro station, next to the RAI Amsterdam convention center.

During tulip season, the area is clearly marked with signage, and staff are typically on hand to guide visitors.

Even if it’s your first time navigating Amsterdam, the setup is easy to find.

Can you visit the tulip fields without going to Keukenhof?

Yes, you can visit commercial tulip fields in the surrounding countryside, but it’s important to understand what that experience actually looks like.

Keukenhof is a curated garden designed for visitors, with carefully arranged flower beds that are consistently in bloom throughout the season.

The nearby tulip fields, on the other hand, are working farms that may be fenced off, privately owned, or inaccessible by foot.

IF YOU WANT GUARANTEED COLOR AND A THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED EXPERIENCE, KEUKENHOF DELIVERS THAT RELIABLY.

If you’re hoping to see wide, striped fields stretching across the landscape, you’ll need to book a private tour to a reputable (and receptive) tulip farm.

What shoes should you wear to Keukenhof?

Comfortable shoes are essential when visiting Keukenhof, with sneakers or walking shoes being the best options.

Be sure to read my post about the Best Shoes To Pack For Long Europe Travel Days for more ideas on what footwear to pack.

How should you dress for the weather at Keukenhof?

Spring in the Netherlands can be unpredictable, and wind is often the biggest factor.

EVEN ON SUNNY DAYS, THERE CAN BE A SHARP, PERSISTENT BREEZE.

Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable throughout the day, and packing an umbrella in case of sporadic showers will keep you dry.

My post on What to Pack for Europe in Spring is full of great ideas and tips.

What are the most common Keukenhof day trip mistakes to avoid?

The biggest mistake is arriving after midday and expecting a calm experience.

The busiest hours fall between late morning and mid-afternoon, when paths and pavilions feel most crowded.

ARRIVING EARLY MAKES A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE.

Another common misstep is not pre-booking tickets and transport

Because entry tickets are timed and often bundled with transportation, waiting until the last minute can leave you with limited or inconvenient options.

Conclusion

PLANNING A KEUKENHOF DAY TRIP FROM AMSTERDAM IS A GREAT WAY TO TAKE IN THE NETHERLANDS LEGENDARY TULIPS.

And thanks to Keukenhof’s well-run operations, getting to and from the gardens from Amsterdam is a breeze.
